I'm really happy to announce the launch of a brand new service here: Fire & Ice Contrast Therapy! And … we're kicking it off by giving away 10 free sessions. (More details on that below)
I've been deeply inspired by Japanese culture, language and aesthetic for most of my life and wanted to build an experience around that, fused with my own Scandinavian heritage of sauna, löyly (the steam that comes from sauna stove rocks) and cold water exposure.
The result is our Fire & Ice Room, an Onsen- (Japanese bathhouse) and Nordic-inspired experience that includes:
🔥 Traditional 5-Person Finnish sauna, offering up to 190 degrees of heat, aromatherapy diffusion, and a custom-designed, 3D-printed sauna ladle for drip-perfect löyly control.
💧 Nordic Cold Dunk shower, for immersive, instant-on/instant-off cold shock exposure that you're in complete control of at all times.
🧊 Aromatherapy-infused Ice Therapy, for aiding with cool down between cycles of heat and cold, or for providing direct contrast stimulation during your sauna.
☺️ Shoji-Wrapped Relaxation Loungers, for rest between cycles of heat+cold or for just basking in all the resiliency-building benefits at the end of your sauna session.
We were honored to have local Japanese calligraphy artist Chiyo Sanada-san (pictured above) bless the room with her own custom-painted sign. 😍 You can see more of her art at chiyosanada.com.
The Fire & Ice Circuit
Why do Contrast Therapy?
So why do all this temperature contrasting? What’s the point?
The human body evolved for millennia without much protection from the elements, compared to our luxurious lives today. Compared to the length of our 300,000 years of having to adapt to various conditions, we’ve been living for a relatively minute amount of time in a tiny temperature range. We keep our homes at 72 degree homes, we work in 72 degree offices, and we wear clothing that keep us comfortable in a few-degree range 24/7. We’ve conquered our environment with novel technologies … and made some of our brilliant biological technologies redundant in the process.
We are not well adapted for this new-found constant comfort. Our human bodies evolved to be adaptable and resilient to extremes. All this modern comfort is alien to our immune systems and nervous systems. It’s making them lazy and disordered, and making us biologically inefficient and sick in the process.
Contrast Therapy helps us rediscover and retrain our innate capacities for adaptability and resiliency. During temperature extremes, our bodies produce heat- and cold-shock proteins. These proteins essentially act like emergency repair crews in our bodies. They’re part of our body’s built-in defense system against stress. While our culture of constant comfort has the intention of minimizing stress, it ironically actually makes us often less adaptable and more stressed, leading to chronic states of inflammation and their mental manifestations depression, anxiety and burnout.
Contrast Therapy seeks to expose us, in short and controlled bursts, to the very stresses that help make us more resilient by triggering the very mechanisms that help us self-repair.
Ready To Get Your Contrast On?
We're offering Contrast Therapy in 3 different session lengths:
30 Minutes - $45
60 Minutes - $70
90 Minutes - $90
To really take full advantage of multiple circuits of heat+cold+rest, which is where you'll find the most benefit, we highly recommend at least 60 minutes. To fully enjoy the space with multiple circuits and time to hang out and rest after your reset, 90 minutes is definitely best.
We'll be creating membership plans and discounted series pricing for Contrast Therapy soon, to make it even cheaper.
Guests are $15. You can bring up to four people with you for some social sauna. If you all split the total cost, that makes it just $21 each for a 30 minute, $26 each for 60 minutes or $30 each for 90 minutes. There's all kind of great reasons to sauna together with friends, it being much cheaper is a big one!
Speaking of friends … we'd love it if you'd tell all of them about this new offering for the community. We think it's pretty unique, and that folks will be excited to hear about it.
In return, we'll enter you into a draw for one of ten 30 minute Contrast Therapy sessions.
To enter: 1. Share our Facebook post or create a post on Instagram from the image below with a link to the Fire & Ice page on our web site. (olyfloat.com/fire-ice-sauna)
