As a graduate student in a clinical psychology program, I was encouraged to go to therapy. Not because I was in crisis (although I was), but because it was imperative for any good clinician to understand the experience we would be asking our own clients to go through. The amount of courage and vulnerability that sitting across from a stranger requires is unparalleled.
The first time I went to therapy, I was at the tail end of completing my Ph.D. and it was for couples counseling. Speaking truth to the hardest parts of a marriage that was unraveling was painful and humbling. The second time I went to therapy I was alone and needed help figuring out how to put myself back together again.
Even as a therapist-in-training, I found myself wondering: Am I saying too much? Do they think I’m ridiculous? Does this person know anything? Understand the nuances of my specific situation? Does this stranger actually care?
In time, with the right therapist, the experience was powerful. Connecting with someone who was fully present, unconditionally supportive, and deeply curious gave me insight about myself that I couldn’t quite see clearly on my own.
Going to therapy made me a much better therapist.
And an even better person.
I'm not alone in this experience. Julie Andrews recently shared how therapy literally saved her life, describing it as one of the most important decisions she ever made.
I wish I would have recognized earlier that you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
Therapy helps you:
Understand your patterns and what’s driving them
Helps you to become a realistic thinker
Make sense of past experiences
Strengthen relationships
Set better boundaries
Show up more authentically in your own life
If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy — or returning to it — take this as your sign.
Whether it’s for untangling anxiety, working through a tough season, learning new ways of connecting with your children, or simply getting to know yourself better, therapy is a gift. It's an experience I think everyone deserves.
