Vintage retro logo that says The Friday Finisher in off white and black colour.
Hi First name / friend,

Is it just me, or is this year flying by? I can’t believe we’re already nearing the end of May, it feels like 2025 only just started. That said, I’m loving the longer days. There’s something special about cycling home after a late workout at 9pm and still catching the last bit of daylight. Small joys.

In this week’s edition, I’ve got some really fun things to share—from a spicy (literally) award-winning hot sauce brand design, a brilliant scribble illustration pack I stumbled across and instantly bookmarked, and an amazing website that I feel I've dreamed about my whole life. Let’s dive in shall we?!

Website OF THE WEEK
No More Fake PNGs, Please

We’ve all been there, Googling a company’s logo, finding a low-res PNG with a “transparent” background that isn’t actually transparent, or grabbing a colour that’s close enough but still not quite right. It’s messy and inconsistent.

I came across Brandfetch this week, and it is a way better solution. Just pop in a company name or URL and it instantly gives you the official logo, brand colours, fonts, and more, straight from the source. No more guesswork or dodgy file downloads. Honestly, I'm wondering where this website has been all my life.

INSIGHT OF THE WEEK
Google goes Gradient

Google just gave its logo a subtle but noticeable refresh—adding a gradient to the classic colors. It's not a huge change at first glance, but the shift from flat to dimensional definitely adds a new layer of depth (and maybe even a bit of AI flair).

If you’re into the nitty-gritty of logo design, my design buddy Will Paterson did a great breakdown of the update in one of his latest YouTube videos. He covers the reasoning behind the gradient, how it was created, and what it might mean for branding trends going forward. Worth a watch if you like seeing how even the smallest design decisions can make a big impact

Tutorial OF THE WEEK
The Best Update Photoshop’s Had in Ages

Photoshop just dropped an upgrade to the Object Selection Tool, and it’s a big one, especially if you do any kind of cutouts or photo manipulation. Now, instead of manually tracing around people, you can simply hover and click to select individual parts like hair, skin, clothing, or accessories. It’s insanely precise and feels like Photoshop finally understands what you’re trying to select without the usual masking struggle.

I made a fun little video showing it in action and how you can use it in real-world design workflows. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, this update seriously speeds things up and keeps your edits looking clean. Worth playing around with if Photoshop is part of your daily toolkit.

BRANDING OF THE WEEK
Award-Winning Hot Sauce Branding

I've been following Morgan from The Logo Lassie for a little while now on Instagram, and I recently came across her brilliant branding project for Calnton Hot Sauce, and it’s seriously worth a look. The design is packed with personality, details and just a show stopping colour palette that will make any shopper pick it up from the shelf.

I saw this week that Morgan just won a Dieline award for this one (major congrats), and it’s easy to see why. The amount of detail, from the small illustrations to the use of typography. It's just brilliant.

Check Out This Scribble Textures Pack I Found

If you're looking to add a bit of hand-drawn energy to your work, this Scribble Textures pack by Acubens Design is a gem. It’s a collection of rough, expressive scribbles that work perfectly for posters, album covers, or any design that needs a bit of raw, sketchy character.
