Vintage retro logo that says The Friday Finisher in off white and black colour.
Hi First name / friend,

Yep, it’s the last Friday of May, which means we’re nearly halfway through the year. Wild, right? So, how are those goals and resolutions holding up? Do you set any? Do you care? Personally, I’ve ticked off a few already: reaching 500,000 followers on Instagram, staying consistent with this weekly newsletter, and planning my first proper educational course.

One goal I’m still working on is landing a solid weekly client. Freelancing can be pretty anxiety-inducing at times, and I’ve noticed I feel way more grounded when I have a regular, retained client I can rely on. While I love the freedom of jumping between projects, having that steady rhythm each week brings a different kind of creative and mental stability. Let’s see if I can lock that in before the end of the year.

That’s the update from my side, now let’s jump into this week’s roundup.

INSIGHT OF THE WEEK
Inside Jaguar’s Failed Rebrand

Jaguar’s latest rebrand has divided opinion like never before. With a new logo, a bold “Miami pink” electric car, and a campaign featuring androgynous models, but no actual cars, it aimed to attract a younger crowd. Instead, it ended up alienating longtime fans and sparking a fierce backlash. What went wrong?

Jaguar insists this was a bold step to shake things up and stand out in a crowded market. But the controversy forced them to rethink their entire approach, including the agency behind it all. If you want to know why this high-profile rebrand failed and what lessons every brand can learn from it, this article is a must-read.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Google Maps Rebrand Challenge

Using Google Maps to pick a totally random business to rebrand? That’s next-level creative thinking. It’s like a design adventure where you never know what you’ll find, and that surprise factor makes the whole process way more fun and pushes you out of your design comfort zones. No brief, no expectations, just a wild, real-world brand to flip on its head.

BRANDING OF THE WEEK
How Do You Rebrand a Giant Like Amazon?

Amazon just got its biggest brand refresh in over 20 years, teaming up with design studio Koto to bring consistency to its massive global presence. The rebrand spans 15 markets, over 50 sub-brands, and includes a custom typeface called Ember Modern that works in 364 languages. The familiar "A to Z" arrow is still there, but now it leans more into the idea of a friendly smile, reflecting Amazon’s goal to make things easy.

Amazon is a giant company, and I honestly can’t imagine how intense this project must have been. So many different touch points, teams, and use cases to consider. Making sure every design solution works across everything from a tiny app icon to a delivery truck is a huge task. I’d love to hear a full behind-the-scenes podcast from Koto on how they pulled off such a massive project. The scale of it is wild.
