So, obviously you’re doing a lot of things. Have you considered not doing some of those things?
Take a second to consider, what are you really good at? What parts of your business light you up? What tasks drain your energy?
This week highlighted something we love about the team environment: we are all different people. Very different. Compare Sarah, one of our team leads, to Matt, our listing concierge. The Venn diagram does not have a lot of overlap.
Our friend Monica Kenton has spent a few team meetings with us, coaching us through the Kolbe A personality system. It identifies the ways that individuals initiate action — which also tells us a lot about how we use our energy. Some people, like Julie, our transaction coordinator, prefer to start projects by conducting hours and hours (and more hours) of research. Some work better by jumping straight to action and figuring out the details later, as Kara does.
All those differences have the potential to trip us up. It’s easy to get frustrated. But when we take the time to explore our individual strengths, we discover a better approach.
Not all of us are good at brainstorming without jumping ahead of ourselves. But Sarah is.
Not all of us can do deep research and analyze data without our eyes glazing over. But William can.
Not all of us have the patience to execute the nitty gritty aspects of projects. But Katie does. (Case in point: she creates this newsletter. Boom! Fourth wall broken.)
Together, we can make cool things happen. Once we realize our own strengths and learn to let others operate in ways that make sense for them, that is.
We don’t all have to do all the things. We don’t all have to do things the same way. It’s better that way.
