What’s more confronting is when we recognise that same pattern in ourselves. It’s natural—and even necessary—to be able to anticipate threats. After all, we’re each the captain of our own ship. But if we navigate life constantly on alert, seeing everything through a negative lens, it can drain our energy and affect the people we care about. |

So how can we tell if we’ve become hypervigilant to life’s negatives? One tell-tale sign is our language—the way we speak to others, and the way we speak to ourselves (if you have an internal monologue; not everyone does, and that’s completely okay). |

Experiment: For one day, gently observe the language you use—or ask someone you trust to offer unbiased feedback. This exercise isn’t about shame or criticism. If you notice areas you'd like to change, be kind to yourself. That’s all they are—areas for growth. And with awareness comes choice. |
