Summer is officially on, and if you know Key West, you know that means sandbar season. If you are local or new to the island life, you likely will notice the energy shift this time of year. Locals absolutely love this time of year, and the sandbars are where you go to soak up the sun and socialize.
If you're anything like me, you enjoy having options. So, here's what you need to know about my two favorite sandbars. It's two completely different vibes but one ocean. Here's my breakdown of Snipes vs Mavin:
Snipes Key Sandbar This one’s for the social butterflies who are looking for a fun party vibe. A big perk is that it's very accessible, and most large, deep-water boats can get to it. Imagine boats tied up, music playing, pups running around, and the occasional floating bar. It’s very lively and ideal if you're feeling outgoing or want to hang out in a larger group.
Marvin Key Sandbar Now, this is more so my speed these days. This is a little slice of quiet paradise. Tucked away and harder to reach (which is kind of the point). Great for low-key days, fishing, or taking in the beauty of the backcountry.
Needless to say, whether you’re craving a party vibe or more laid back experience, there's an option for you! Pro tip: pack a cooler with loads of hydrating beverages, snacks, bring the tunes, and enjoy!
Bubba Awards Season is Here!
It’s that time of year again, The Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards are back! Every summer, locals get to vote for their favorite businesses, eats, and island icons, and I’d be honored if you’d consider nominating me for Best Realtor. Your support is so appreciated! There are few things tastier than ice cream on a hot summer day. And let's not get it twisted… not just any ice cream makes the cut.
If you're hearing about this for the first time, run, don't walk. Swinging by Icestream for a scoop (or two) might become your new favorite hobby. It’s parked right in front of my go-to morning spot, Morning Joint, on Cudjoe Key.
The ice cream is homemade, small-batch, and made fresh onsite in the coolest renovated Airstream. My go-to order is Birthday Cake in a homemade waffle cone. It’s creamy, nostalgic, and the cone is warm and crispy. Seriously, need I say more?
This place is also super cute. There’s a laid-back patio with games for the kids, pup cups for your dog, and they’re open until 9pm most nights. They’ve got non-dairy options too and new flavors every month.
If you haven’t been yet, treat yourself. You won’t regret it.
Quick Tip: Are you Covered for Hurricane Season?
I know sandbars and sundaes are way more exciting than hurricane season, but before you get too comfy out on the water, take a quick minute to prep for the "just in case."
Now that we’re officially in hurricane season (starting June 1), here’s your no-stress checklist to help you stay ready:
1. Check Your Insurance
Make sure your windstorm and flood coverage are both current and active. In the Keys, these are usually separate policies, and a lot of people don’t realize they’re missing one until it’s too late.
Bonus tip: Take fresh photos or a quick video walkthrough of your home for documentation. It takes 10 minutes and can make filing a claim way easier.
2. Do a Little Home Maintenance
Clean your gutters and check the roof for any loose shingles
Trim back trees and coconuts while crews are still available
Test your shutters, generator, and account for all bolts and parts
Declutter and get rid of anything you don’t want to deal with during cleanup
Peace of mind is part of the Keys lifestyle too. A little prep now means less stress later!
P.S. I'll be dropping more helpful hurricane prep tips in next month’s newsletter, so keep an eye out!
Sending Lots of Love & Sunshine!
