Death Readiness Dispatch
June 13, 2025

Hi there,

I was a fast kid, fast enough that by eighth grade, I was training with the boys’ high school team. One day, someone joked that I should be careful not to get too muscular—my mom might not like it. As if she wanted me to be small, quiet, careful. They didn’t know my mom.

You know what my mom did? She found me a weightlifting coach.

A couple of years later, in the high school girls’ locker room, another girl called me “butch.” And, I was proud. I don’t know if that’s what she intended, but that’s how I took it. I took being “butch” as a compliment because of the mom I had, a mom who taught me that power wasn’t something to be ashamed of. I saw my body as powerful, capable and worthy of space.

Death readiness isn’t just about estate planning; it’s about honoring your voice, your choices, and the power you’ve had all along. And that includes knowing what a Will actually does, and doesn’t do.

That’s why I created a free, short video called “Do You Need a Will?”
In this free video, I walk you through exactly what a Will does (and doesn’t do), and how to know if it’s the right move for your situation.

You’ll learn:
  • Why some Wills end up useless (yes, even mine could)
  • What happens if you don’t have one
Whether you’re trying to make sense of your own plan, or finally get your parents to talk about theirs, this is a great place to start.

What Groundhog Day taught me about
Women and Wills

Some of the most damaging messages show up as punchlines. Background jokes. “Classic” movie moments we were all supposed to laugh at. But when I rewatched Groundhog Day, Three Men and a Baby, and Miss Congeniality through today’s lens, the patterns were impossible to ignore: Pushy men rewarded. Women dismissed, sexualized, or expected to carry everyone else’s load, without question, training, or credit.

These aren’t just outdated plot lines. They’re blueprints. And they’ve shaped how women are treated, and treat themselves, when it comes to caregiving, decision-making, and estate planning.

This week’s podcast episode unpacks those messages, and why it’s time to write new ones. If you’re done following scripts that were never written with you in mind, this episode is for you.

Hit reply and tell me what old movie script you’re ready to rewrite.
Thanks for being here.
