This photo is just so darn adorable.
Thank you to Carolina Literacy Project and founder Tracy Butler for inviting me back year after year to both of her summer camps.
Photos like this—kids being fully themselves, playful, curious, full of light—remind me why we do the work we do.
And yes, I’m asking something of you.
Wednesday, July 2nd — a free, virtual Adult Mental Health First Aid certification for South Carolina residents, 18 and over, thanks to Prisma Health, their presenter, and a SAMHSA grant.
If you're off work this week, if things are a little quieter, if you're an employer and can offer this to one of more of your staff—please consider signing up or sharing.
Most of us took PE and health in high school—but mental health? That part was missing. But here we are—adults navigating workplaces, families, and friendships without the tools we need.
This is education too. It’s just as important as reading or math—learning how to listen, notice, and support. And it’s never too late to learn.
Let’s listen to the echoes of my 25+ years in education: “It’s for the children.”
Some of us took that to heart so deeply, we worked through exhaustion, poured from empty cups, and kept going because we believed it mattered. And it did. But that’s a self-care story for another day.
This is about making sure our future—the ones in these photos—grow up in a community that sees them, supports them, and understands mental health.
And yes, it’s last minute. But sometimes last minute is just right—we can look up, see the gap in our schedule, and say: I can do this.
