Delivering in Johannesburg in the 1960s
Back in the day, life on the road was a very different story. Alan Stiller occasionally drove his father’s 8-ton truck, delivering goods across Johannesburg. It wasn’t just about getting from point A to B it meant navigating rough roads, dealing with manual controls, and handling strict regulations. Permits were required just to make a delivery, and you had to stick to allocated time slots or risk fines.
There was no GPS, no traffic updates, no cellphones just a map, a schedule, and a lot of determination.
Today, deliveries are backed by digital tools, real-time tracking, and streamlined logistics. It’s hard to imagine how much more effort and planning it took back then but Alan’s story brings it to life.
A great read from someone who experienced it firsthand, behind the wheel of his father’s 8-tonner in the heart of johannesburg, South Africa.
