This year’s Independence Day travel period is expected to break records, with 72.2 million people planning to travel at least 50 miles from home between June 28 and July 6, according to AAA—up 1.7 million from last year and 7 million from 2019.
Air and road travel are both set to hit record highs this Independence Day.
Over 5.8 million Americans are expected to fly, with domestic airfare averaging $260, the lowest in four years. Popular destinations include Las Vegas, New York, and Seattle. TSA’s busiest day is expected to be Sunday, July 6, with July 3 as the peak departure day and July 8 the cheapest return.
Road trips are also booming, with 61.6 million people expected to drive, up 2.2% from last year. Gas prices are the lowest since 2021, helping ease the cost of travel. Expect crowded airports and heavy traffic—planning ahead is key.
