Hey First name / friends!

Wow!! We really kicked the first week of the “Celebrations” Mini Collection Challenge off with a bang! 🎉🎉🎉

This is the most submissions we've ever had for a #CreateWithCatCoq challenge!

And you know what the most exciting part is for me? That everyone who is joining in is on their way to having a complete, pitch-perfect mini-collection!

Missed the announcement last week? Let me catch you up:

Over the next few weeks, I'm hosting an email challenge to help you create a full mini collection. Each week, you'll get a prompt on Tuesday and a business tip on Friday to help you pick up the momentum in your art business.

At the end of each week's email, I'll link to the past challenge prompts in case you need to catch up.

Important Notes About How to Participate:
Joining the challenge is simple (and free)!
  • Follow the value-packed prompt in each week's Tuesday newsletter.
  • Share your artwork on Instagram with the hashtag #CreateWithCatCoq and tag me @catcoq in the actual photo you post.
  • If you participate every week, you'll get the opportunity to submit your work at the end and be entered into a drawing to win a full ride scholarship to my program, The Art of Collections which opens July 22nd!
  • We will be having a live (virtual) celebration at the end of the challenge. Save the date for July 22nd and join live for a Q&A filled with juicy insights from me!
The Challenge Theme:
✨ Celebrations ✨
(Think life’s special moments: birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation, etc.)

Celebration Mini-Collection Part 2 of 4

Prompt: Complex Pattern
Last week, we illustrated “Hero Designs” aka the main focal point of your collection.

This week, we're going to work on a complex pattern. A complex pattern is also called a supporting pattern, and it simply means that it's a pattern that complements your hero design and ties the collection together. But it has more depth, movement, and variation than a simple blender repeat (more on those types of patterns next week).

Here's why supporting patterns are useful:
The hero illustrations from your collection will be front & center on greeting cards. But the patterns could act as a cute accent for envelope liners. You could pitch the hero illustration on its own, but if your potential licensing partner was looking for accenting artwork, they might pass over your work if it doesn’t include supporting pieces like patterns!

And the best part? You don't have to start from scratch with these!

I often take elements that I've used in my hero illustration and rearrange them to create a complex pattern. In this example, I took the donuts from the hero and arranged them into a seamless repeat in Photoshop! It's all about working smarter, not harder!

Take a look at your own hero illustration, and see what elements you could turn into a fun repeating pattern!

I can't wait to see what you make!
