July 2025
Happy July!

This month, we’re diving into some timely topics and important updates for Kansas landowners, communities, and tree enthusiasts. In our latest Kansas Canopy Podcast episode, we take a closer look at federal budget cuts and what they could mean for the work of the Kansas Forest Service.

Our tree of the month, the resilient and ancient ginkgo, brings both beauty and history to Kansas landscapes. As summer heat settles in, keep an eye out for Japanese beetles, a pest known for making a big impact in a short time—check out our tips for managing them later in this issue. And if you’re thinking about planting black walnut, don’t miss our newly updated publication to guide your efforts.

Last week marked Wildland Firefighter Week of Remembrance, a time to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and reflect on the sacrifices made to protect our communities and landscapes. We remain grateful for the dedication of wildland firefighters and continue to recognize their vital work throughout the year.

Stay cool, stay informed, and thank you for growing with us!

I came across this old photo in an album this week, but was disappointed that there was no year or caption. Thanks to our in-house history buff, Ryan Armbrust, we found a caption for this photo in the National Archives

An excellent crop of wheat is ready for the combine. This wheat is located on a sandy
soil which in early spring is subject to damage by north and west winds. The shelter-
belt along the west and north of the wheat field was planted in the spring of 1938 and
now gives good protection from the wind. Alice G. Lipper farm 2 miles southeast of

It made me think about the farmers across Kansas who are continuing or concluding their wheat harvest this month. The clothes may change, but somewhere in the state, we could likely find a similar setting today!
