The insect world is coming alive this month: listen for the classic “Katy did, Katy didn't” sound of the katydids, look for fireflies flashing, find monarch butterfly chrysalises on milkweed plants, and keep an eye out for eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies in meadows. Meanwhile, the Full Blueberry Moon on the 10th signals the ripening of all the blueberry varieties found on the Mashantucket reservation. Ghost pipes—a unique flowering plant without pigment—begin to push up from the ground, taking nutrients from neighboring plants with the help of fungi. Toward the end of the month, expect baby animals of all kinds: chipmunk litters are growing up getting out and about, and both Great-horned Owlets and Roseate Tern chicks are fledging. To finish out the month, the Delta Aquarids meteor shower will peak on the 30th.
