Happy July First name / community member! We are just a big over halfway through the year and according to our annual calendar, we should be reviewing the previous six months and making plans for the next. However, we know that this year isn't like previous years and based on our recent history it will be different than future years. That makes planning a little bit more challenging, but nonetheless important. Looking back over the last six months, consider: - Where did you panic?
- Where did you find ease?
- How did your communication change with your board, staff, and donors?
- What didn't change in your communication?
- What are people asking you all the time? How are you responding?
- What does “transparency” mean right now?
- As you look at your revenue, what are you seeing as bright spots?
- What are you seeing as the holes and how have you measured those gaps?
- Where are you seeking advice and guidance and where are you going it alone?
- Is there an opportunity to do this analysis differently?
Using that review, as you look ahead to the next six months, the questions become: - Where do you want to focus your time?
- What is demanding your attention and what is calling for your attention?
- Can you identify the difference?
- Where are the moments of ease for you and your staff?
- Who are you connecting with for “safe space” conversations? Where are you testing ideas and pushing boundaries?
- How are you communicating needs to your board? Are you allowing/encouraging your board to change with the environment?
- How are you communicating with staff?
- How are you communicating with clients and your community?
- Are you ready to take action?
That last question is a big one for me. I haven't been ready. I might be now, but I'm not sure. Testing the waters and understanding that too much testing leads to muddy water, not a clear pool. Waiting for other people to take action to address the results instead of bravely stepping forward. Talking about “risk” but not understanding how it applies to my decisions and my organization. It's tricky. It's tricky enough to require us to use the summer to make some decisions. That's my thought process. What's yours? Feel free to reach out to talk through ideas. NPN is happy to help you create the safe spaces for real conversation. |
