Maine
Memories

I spent most of this week in Portland, Maine, and returned on Thursday evening. It was everything I could have hoped for.
I went to a conference for digital media in higher education because we have a budget for professional development. When my mom heard it was in Maine, she decided to book a trip with me. I'm so glad we went! It felt rushed trying to get everything together just a few weeks prior to the conference, but we made it work. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips that I'll always remember and treasure.

Maine:
The Way Life Should Be
Becalmed upon the sea of Thought,
Still unattained the land it sought,
My mind, with loosely-hanging sails,
Lies waiting the auspicious gales.

On either side, behind, before,
The ocean stretches like a floor,--
A level floor of amethyst,
Crowned by a golden dome of mist.

Blow, breath of inspiration, blow!
Shake and uplift this golden glow!
And fill the canvas of the mind
With wafts of thy celestial wind.

Blow, breath of song! until I feel
The straining sail, the lifting keel,
The life of the awakening sea,
Its motion and its mystery!

Food in Maine
Maine is all about the seafood. You're practically right on the water, which means you're surrounded by lobster rolls and seafood sampler plates - the freshest of ingredients. I didn't eat out much, since food was mostly provided, at the hotel for breakfast, and the lunch during the conference. But, I would meet up with my mom for dinner - we'd go out to a nicer restaurant (still with decent prices). She's not a seafood fan, so she did fish & chips, a burger and a club sandwich. The average meal was anywhere from $30-$40. Thankfully, I do love seafood.

Here are a few things I tried:
  1. Lobster Roll
  2. Grilled Scallops with roasted potatoes and green beans
  3. Whoopie Pies - Maple filling
  4. Blueberry (tea, coffee cake)
  5. Potato donut
Also, I had no idea that Maine was known for so many foods beside lobster and seafood. They're also known for their blueberries, Fluffernutter sandwiches (peanut butter and marshmallow fluff), potato donuts and Whoopie Pies. Who knew?

Gorgeous Gelato had great gelato, and was worth the hype! We had Beal's Ice Cream the following night (blueberry - YUM) but the atmosphere wasn't as friendly as the Gorgeous Gelato team.

Filmmaker and national treasure, Nancy Meyers, essentially created the style that is more commonly referred to as “coastal grandmother." Now, usually it's seen in east coast settings, such as Maine. So I was very excited to change things up from the California vibes. It's a lot of linen (pants and shirts), creams and neutrals, and stripes when done well. I did buy a nautical (blue and white) cardigan, but I'm glad I didn't bring it after all because it was way too hot for that. I had visions of cool evenings and coastal breeze mornings. But, apparently that's something they lie to you about in movies. Just kidding, but it is apparently very hot in July. Now I know.

favorite moments from the trip

The eduWeb Summit
Obviously the Summit itself was exciting. There are very few conferences specifically designed for the higher education realm, especially for digital media, like email marketing and social media. I especially loved hearing more about the trends in email marketing and ambassador programs to include students in the brand storytelling and sharing on socials. I'd definitely be interested in going to next year's conference in Florida.

The Portland Head Light
My grandma always loved lighthouses, so I developed a love of them, too. Being able to see a true lighthouse in person was such a special moment. We had a chance to walk around the area, take in the sea, talk to a few people visiting and not feel rushed to get to the next thing.

Ferry ride to Peaks Island
My mom and I took a ferry to Peaks Island - It was about 30 minutes to get across; taking in the views, letting the wind blow and the waves crash below us. We watched the sailboats and others pass by. We ate dinner at Jones Landing (I had another lobster roll) and walked around the small town. We were there for a little over an hour or so, then headed back, just around sunset. Ferry rides are one of my favorite ways to see the city and admire the beauty all around.
Portland was a great place to visit, and definitely introduced me to Maine. But, it felt like one of those places that once was enough; We made the most of it while we were there. It's very hip, artsy and filled with pubs for trivia, drinking and socializing. Otherwise, everything closes a little on the early side.
People who are from there and live there, they have a very strong love and passion for it. It's a beautiful thing! I also learned a lot more about the surrounding areas -  Kennebunkport and Acadia. I'd love to go back there again someday and see more of the beautiful state. It truly is a gem.
It was the perfect short getaway. I feel a bit more refreshed, excited and it was comforting to hear from others who are in a similar position to mine. I have ideas that I'm excited to work on and dream up for the next academic year!
