Want a little vacation eye candy? Here's one of my favorite San Francisco streets. 🌁 🚗

They leave their hearts in San Francisco.

When I meet them, I greet them with a smile.

And sometimes, with directions, too.

As you can see from this photo, Lombard truly lives up to its reputation as “the Crookedest Street” in San Francisco.

The city is also its own peninsula: only seven miles wide by seven miles in length. Lombard, which runs west-to-east, traverses the city's full latitudinal width. The street's west side is primarily flat until you cross it's four-lane “Main Street,” which is Van Ness.

However, Lombard's east side climbs up a pretty sharp hill. Some city planner came up with the great idea of zig-zagging the steepest block of the street. House builders decided to take advantage of its whimsical design. The homes on this now-famous zig-zagging lane enjoy spectacular views.

I'm a walker. And since Lombard a mere eight blocks from my place and I'm not afraid of a few hills, some days you'll spot me on a bench below Alice Marble Tennis Courts, in George Sterling Park, which is on Lombard's west side, and on its steepest block.

Tourists who are also walkers will find my secret bench because they've tackled the block, but have yet to find the twisty part of the street. Invariably, they ask me why they've yet to come across it Of course, I point them in the right direction: back onto Lombard and another half-block uphill, where Hyde Street crosses Lombard. You can't miss Hyde because it is also a street with tracks for our whimsical cable cars.

And yes, I take photos of the cars, and wave at its passengers in the hope that they wave back. Many do!
