WEEK 2 | NOTICE WHAT'S AROUND US | DAY 9
Down

I know I just talked about looking down at our phones but today's prompt is about looking past that! When I was a kid (back when cell phones didn't exist) I remember crouching down to watch where the ants were going or picking a flower from the grass at the park. Notice the surfaces you are walking on and how they feel under your feet, who is down there (maybe a furry friend who wants to be pet or walked?), where the ants are going, fallen leaves, a lady bug on a blade of grass, pretty tile patterns, or cracks in the sidewalk and asphalt. If you have access to stairs or a rooftop, spend some time up there and look down at the view below. Is there something that catches your eye or leads you to an action (like leashing up your pup or painting your toe nails :))? Is there something new or interesting you've never seen before?

21 EVERY DAYS

Take your observations and turn them into a visual for your project:
  • Recreate something you saw: sketch or paint it, take a photo of it then print it out and glue it down, if you walked on some pavers (like in the image above) cut out those shapes then glue each one down following the pattern you saw as if you were a landscaper
  • Use what you saw as a starting point: if you saw a flower growing out of a sidewalk crack, you could take just the flower and create a pattern with it to fill your section with
  • Consider the themes that came up for you as you were noticing things: if you looked down at grass and leaves it could make you think about the environment and conservation, if you saw a bunch of people rushing to work it might make you think about the rat race and the way work is structured in our society.
  • If nothing caught your eye, reflect on what the word “down” means to you-- how you're no longer going down a rabbit hole with scrolling, the idea of letting your guard down, emotions that may be attached to this word for you.

Have a great start to your week! Talk to you tomorrow,
