WEEK 2 | NOTICE WHAT'S AROUND US | DAY 10!
Outside
The Summer Day by Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

The most opposite thing I can think of when it comes to social media, apps, and tech is going outside away from all the screens, scrolling, and devices. For day 10 of our break I thought we could celebrate by spending some time outdoors and noticing what's out there! Do what you can today then I also encourage you to make plans to spend a solid amount of time in a natural space you enjoy (a day at the beach, an overnight camping trip, a few hours on a trail in the woods, a picnic at a nearby park, going for a morning hike with your pup, etc.)

For those of us in the summer season, consider doing something early in the morning (maybe even waking up to catch the sunrise?) or in the evenings (watching the sunset or stargazing) to take advantage of the longer days and cooler weather during these hours.

Take inspiration from Mary: kneel down in the grass, be idle, watch a grasshopper, stroll through the fields, spend a day outside.

21 EVERY DAYS

What did you notice or find outside that you want to remember and add to your project? It can be something from nature or something urban and modern that reflects your city or neighborhood. From a fallen leaf or flower to graffiti and flyers posted on electric polls, here are a few ideas to consider:
  • Take your project outside and trace shadows that you find
  • Take items from nature (preferably things that have already fallen naturally or aren't alive like pebbles or seashells) to create brushes and tools to make markings or imprints with
  • Borrow color palettes and a certain style of art from graffiti or murals
  • If you live in a city like Seattle where there are areas with tons of flyers on polls with info to tear off or free newspapers and magazines, take that and use it to make a collage
  • If you go outside today to pick up coffee, grab take out, or shop, use the packaging, napkins, paper or plastic bags, etc. as the material for your section.

Congrats and Happy Day 10!!! As we get closer to the mid way point, this might be where it gets a little harder--the initial excitement and momentum may start wearing off, Instagram may be calling, or you might have missed a few days of your project. If that's the case, I invite you to jump back in, wherever you are in this process and journey! Let's keep going :)

Talk to you tomorrow,
