🚧 Tapachula: We began critical safety upgrades at a shelter, including a new fence, lighting, and secure locks. Designed with staff and residents, this will address real concerns about violence and kidnapping. In border shelters, infrastructure is protection.
🌿 Reynosa: At Casa Lulu, a women-led shelter, we’re transforming the courtyard into a shaded, multi-use space with fresh paving, a permanent overhead shade structure, and an outdoor kitchen. This space will support meals, support groups, and clinic days (…and volleyball!)
And there’s more good news: we’ve partnered with FutureMakers! This collaboration brings six hands-on STEM kits to children in our programs. These kits cover everything from spring-powered vehicles to air-pressured creatures and art machines. Kids get the chance to:
Design a zooming vehicle powered by a spring-driven motor
Invent a wind-up flying machine
Assemble art machines using levers and fulcrums
Explore symmetry with a spinning “blendie”
Engineer an air-powered creature with a giant mouth
Tell a story through hand-cranked illustrated contraptions
We can’t wait to see what they create and the confidence, joy, and curiosity that will grow along the way!
