Land Use Code Guidance for Agrivoltaics in Colorado |
|
The Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center is pleased to share with you our recently published Land Use Code Guidance for Deploying Agrivoltaics in Colorado. This guidance is meant to support local governments across Colorado as they consider how to permit solar photovoltaic systems on farmland that integrate agriculture within them, i.e. agrivoltaics. We know agrivoltaics is possible and that it works given upfront planning, adapted designs, and diligent construction practices as has been done successfully since 2020 at Jack's Solar Garden in Longmont, Colorado. We hope that communities across Colorado choose to deploy agrivoltaic systems that generate revenue for farmers and ranchers from solar development land leases while keeping farmland accessible and well-stewarded for agricultural activities to thrive. |

Our second stop was Weld and Morgan Counties! Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center continued our state tour series with a visit to Weld and Morgan Counties June 11th through 13th! We focused on introducing the region to agrivoltaics and building new partnerships to support future agrivoltaic initiatives. We spent time meeting with local organizations, extension offices, farms service agencies, natural resources conservation service agencies, and conservation districts. We also got the opportunity to visit CSU's new agrivoltaic site in Nunn and held a seminar with Huwa Enterprises in Keenesburg titled, "Solar on Farmland." Huwa Enterprises had a live demonstration of cattle underneath solar panels, there was a panel discussion on agrivoltaics, and guests engaged in a productive roundtable discussion after the panel. We plan to continue our tour to different counties around Colorado to become an agrivoltaics resource for all! |

We're thrilled to share new updates to our Education webpage, with free classroom resources and field trip offerings. Our latest lessons, like "Harnessing Energy from Light," include step-by-step instructions for engaging, hands-on labs you can easily run in your classroom. We're also launching a brand-new field trip experience! Join us on the farm for a modified tour where students will use iNaturalist to investigate a scientific hypothesis and contribute to ongoing research right here on site. Explore, discover, and learn with us—for free! |

We’ve had a busy month welcoming groups of curious learners to Jack’s! Groundwork Denver jumped in to help save a patch of raspberries from a gauntlet of Canadian thistle. DPS Renewable Academy explored how agrivoltaics supports the land, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and benefits livestock and workers alike—they were especially intrigued by the chickens living under the solar panels! Most recently, we partnered with Play Boulder for a day of hands-on service learning. We’re so grateful to share these meaningful experiences on the farm! |

New Opportunity: Grow Your Agribusiness Under Solar Panels The Solar Array Lands Supporting Agribusiness (SALSA) program is now welcoming applications for the 2026 season. SALSA connects experienced agriculturalists—particularly those from underserved and immigrant communities—with free access to land beneath solar panels to build or expand their agribusiness. Participants receive step-by-step business support, funding opportunities, and agrivoltaic technical assistance to launch or grow their own farming or ranching enterprises. From raising livestock to cultivating crops, SALSA helps turn underutilized solar lands into thriving agribusinesses—while promoting clean energy and local food production. We have 4 sites in Colorado available so far and many others in the pipeline! See site portfolios for two Fort Collins sites linked below. We look forward to working with you and supporting new agrivoltaic leaders on the Front Range and beyond! Contact: Carolita Landers, carolita@coagrivoltaic.org | 720-437-9945

New Agrisolar Toolkit: Helps Navigate Planning and Siting Challenges AgriSolar Consulting has released a new interactive resource, which combines county-level land use regulations with key data layers including transmission infrastructure, existing solar sites, and conservation areas. We hope this can be a valuable resource to help projects better align with local priorities and land stewardship goals. |
