Edition 34: Devising a plan

Welcome Fellow lawn addicts to another instalment of “The Fulcrum”.
Winter is a great time to pause and plan ahead for your lawn.
With growth slowing down and fewer jobs on the go, it’s the ideal window to reflect on what worked, what didn’t in previous seasons and what your lawn needs through the year. Taking the time now to map out your seasonal approach means you’re not scrambling to keep up come spring—Stay ahead of the game and ready to go when the growing season kicks in.
Every Great Lawn Starts with a Purpose
Before you dive into products, programs, or renovation, it’s worth asking: What do I actually want from my lawn this year? Every great lawn has a purpose—and so should your plan.
Here are a few of the common goals we hear:
Thicker coverage
Fewer weeds
Pest-free turf
Deeper, darker colour
Stripes! — or a smooth, clean finish
Whatever your vision, your mowing frequency, renovation timing, and nutrition strategy should all align with that goal.

✂️ Mowing: The Most Underrated Lawn Tool
Let’s start with mowing—arguably the most overlooked tool in lawn care planning.
Before you even think about fertiliser or soil amendments, ask yourself: How often do I want to mow?
Frequent mowing is one of the most effective ways to:
Boost density
Keep weeds in check
Maintain a consistent, clean finish
The rule of thumb? The lower the height of cut (HOC), the more often you’ll need to mow. That’s because of the ⅓ rule: try to avoid removing more than a third of the leaf blade in a single cut.
Mowing frequency guide:
Tight, manicured look – 2–3 times a week (or more)
Standard finish – Once a week
Chasing stripes? – You’ll get more defined, consistent lines with more frequent passes
For context, elite sporting fields and golf courses often mow 4–7 times a week. You don’t need to go that far, but it shows what consistent mowing can achieve.

🧪 Soil Testing: One Small Step, Big Impact
If there’s one recommendation we always stand behind;
it’s a pre-renovation soil test.
Knowing what’s already in your soil helps you:
Apply only what’s needed
Avoid wasting money on unnecessary inputs
Make smarter, more targeted decisions for turf performance
It’s a simple step that leads to stronger results—especially if your goals include boosting colour, growth, or improving overall soil health.
 Fertiliser Planning: Feeding for Purpose
Once you’ve set your goals and mapped out mowing and renovation timing, it’s time to talk fertiliser planning.
Different grass types have different nutritional needs—but here’s a simple rule of thumb:
Cool-season grasses generally need a bit more fertiliser over the season
Warm-season grasses are more efficient and can often get by with less—especially when paired with smart watering
That said, both can thrive with a balanced plan built around a few key principles.

💧 The Pro’s Approach: What Turf Managers Focus On
Elite Turf Managers and Golf Course Supers don’t rely on guesswork. Their programs usually revolve around three or four consistent pillars:
Moisture management – Wetting agents and penetrants to keep water moving through the profile
Soil supplementation – Often using kelp or other organic-based products
Controlled nitrogen inputs – Preferably in slow-release or stabilised forms
This kind of setup gives a clearer picture of what to expect from your turf—growth, colour, resilience—and makes it easier to tweak things with liquid supplements or PGRs as needed.

🧪 Granular vs Liquid: Timing is Everything
Liquid fertilisers are typically applied either monthly or at half-rates every fortnight—a strategy known as spoon-feeding. It keeps nutrition consistent and avoids the peaks and troughs.
Granular options, especially slow-release blends, last anywhere from 6 to 15 weeks depending on the product and technology in the granule. That’s why they’re often the backbone of a seasonal plan.
