Transitioning between tasks can be really frustrating for people with ADHD. It doesn’t matter whether the tasks are small, like doing chores, or major, like starting a new job and relocating—the ADHD brain just struggles with shifting from one thing to another. That's because it requires shifting attention, mental focus, and sometimes even behavior or physical activity from the current task to a new one.
Shifting from one task to another is not always simple— it actually requires multiple executive function skills to work together and ADHD totally messes with that.
Some people say that transitioning between tasks with an ADHD brain feels like your body is moving faster than your brain, leaving you feeling discombobulated.
That sensation might last a few seconds or a few minutes. Now imagine how many task transitions someone goes through in a day and the toll it can take on their mental and emotional well-being. That constant cycle wears you down over time and going through it again and again is what eventually leads to anxiety.
