Overlooked Travel Costs

HOW TO AVOID STICKER SHOCK

Ever experienced this, First name / friend?

Flights are booked. Hotel is confirmed. And bonus! You’re well within your budget.

…Until the extra fees start popping up. Resort fees? Parking charges? City taxes? VAT? That breakfast you thought was included?

The fact that you have to pay over $150 to select your seat ( even in Business Class ) on British Airways sends me into ORBIT.

Suddenly your trip costs way more than expected, and you haven’t gone shopping yet!

While many of these fees can’t be avoided entirely, knowing about them in advance reduces the sticker shock and helps you pad your budget where it counts.

When looking at hotels on line, you have to be careful. The room category and often all the “hidden fees” are clear as mud.  And VAT is a real Buzz Kill.
I will often ask you to send me what you are looking at so we can compare apples to apples.  ( Plus my Virtuoso amenities add lots of perks!)

Here are a few of the most common culprits….

P.S  I will be out of the office attending  the Gifted Travel Network Conference, and then on to Tuscany for Sam's “big” birthday celebration.

I will not be able to modify or start new trips from September 7- 21, 2026, clients in travel – you know how to find me!

Resort & City Fees & VAT

Those pesky nightly charges add hundreds to your bill at checkout.

Plan Ahead: Ask about resort or city taxes in advance, or work with someone who’ll outline the total cost up front.  Looking at hotels on line?  That rate almost never includes fees.  Or $50 a night for parking.
Tipping & Service Charges

A misunderstanding of tipping culture (or a “mandatory” service fee you didn’t expect) can add up fast.

Plan Ahead: Ask about tipping expectations and include them in your budget from the start.  I always include tipping guides in my itineraries.
Foreign Transaction Fees & Exchange Rates

Paying in USD abroad or using a card with foreign transaction fees can quietly chip away at your budget.  Always select “ pay in local currency” if offered that option.

Plan Ahead: Use a travel-friendly credit card that waives foreign fees.
Trip Cancellation, Interruption, or Delay

Getting stuck with nonrefundable costs due to weather, illness, or airline chaos is the ultimate budget buster.  This can be thousands of dollars.

Plan Ahead: Protect your investment with travel insurance that covers cancellations, delays, and interruptions.  I don't travel without it.
Vacations are meant for memories, not money stress. Knowing what to expect, and booking with someone who plans for the unexpected, means you get to enjoy your trip without side-eyeing every receipt.
