A rather alarming report published earlier this month by Miles Richardson, a professor of nature connectedness at the University of Derby, has found that “Human connection to nature has declined 60% in 200 years”, as a result of "urbanisation, intergenerational change, and the quiet erosion of everyday nature in our lives".

Not surprisingly, this disconnection has huge consequences, as the value that is placed on healthy, thriving nature, by society, is continually diminished.  The 2024 Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Nexus report stated that: 
“The underlying causes of biodiversity loss identified by the report are the disconnection of people from nature and domination over nature and other people; the inequitable concentration of power and wealth; and the prioritisation of short-term individual and material gains.”

This is why all of EOCA’s projects, to conserve and restore biodiversity, work towards reconnecting people with nature as part of their objectives.

The Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO) is a joint initiative of the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the G20 Global Land Initiative GLI/UNCCD. It supports youth-led businesses tackling sustainability challenges, driving circularity, and restoring ecosystems through entrepreneurship. 

The initiative is calling on young entrepreneurs to join the Land Restoration Category of its Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO)—a unique global opportunity to accelerate land restoration businesses through funding, training, and international visibility.
