We have experienced yacht-infused opulence in the likes of St. Barths and Nantucket, but nothing compares to the unapologetic, flashy flair of Sardinia. Soren fell in love with mega-yachts (as distinct from super-yachts!), while Charlie declared he had the “best day of his life” cliff-jumping off the Maddalena islands.
Our days were filled with bustling Italian beach clubs, island hopping, and launching paddleboards and other toys into a sparkling aqua bathtub of a sea. We dined on malloreddus pasta, calamari fra diavolo, pizza, pecorino cheese, and copious amounts of nocciola gelato. In true Italian fashion, we stayed out late at charming street-side restaurants near lively piazzas, with live classical music performances filling the air and shops open well into the night.
A major takeaway: Sardinia is an extreme iteration of a destination that requires local intel to enjoy fully. We uncovered lesser-known villages, local beaches, and family-run restaurants, while also learning the ins and outs of timing, traffic, reservations, and transportation. Sardinia is gorgeous, complex, and best experienced when done “right.”
DESIGN-FORWARD DESTINATIONS
When Hilary at Travel Sommelier recently found herself pausing over her camera roll — she was reminded of how deeply design moves her when she travels. For her, the magic isn’t just in how a space looks, but in how it makes you feel: the way a courtyard can quiet your thoughts, the way a room’s light and color can lift your spirit, or the way a perfectly placed detail can surprise you or spark the imagination to recreate something similar at home. Those are the moments that make her stop, feel, and reach instinctively for her camera.
A hotel has never been simply a place to stay. It can be a catalyst for memory, emotion, and wonder. From Portugal’s untamed Alentejo coast to the effortless glamour of the French Riviera to South Africa’s striking architectural lodges, Hilary found herself capturing these design-forward escapes again and again — places that became destinations in their own right. Here, she shares snapshots of a few that moved her most.
hotel Vermelho, portugal
On Portugal’s unspoiled Alentejo coast, Vermelho is Christian Louboutin’s first hotel — and it’s every bit as bold and beautiful as his iconic red soles.
With just 13 rooms, this intimate retreat felt like stepping into a masterpiece: hand-painted azulejos, Moorish-inspired details, antiques and art hung on the walls from Louboutin’s own private collection, and gardens designed by Louis Benech. Whether I was sipping a cocktail at the scarlet-tiled Bar Vermelho, dining in the jewel-toned restaurant, or walking the halls in wonderment, every detail felt curated yet deeply personal.
But it was the pool that truly enchanted me — framed by sculptures and gardens, gazing out into a forest that seemed endless. I lingered in the water for hours, even as the rain steadily fell around me, turning the moment into something dreamlike and unforgettable. Vermelho isn’t just a stay — it’s a love letter to Christian's craft, Portuguese culture, and the art of living beautifully.
hôtel villa marie, saint-Tropez
Perched in the pine-covered hills above Saint-Tropez, Villa Marie captures the essence of wild luxury. Overlooking iconic Pampelonne Bay — home to Saint-Tropez’s longest and most famous beach — the hotel feels both expansive and tucked away from the bustle of town.
Wandering the property felt like a full sensory transport — gardens that both spilled over in abundance and stood sculptural in their design, with the gentle hum of fountains carrying through the air everywhere you walked. Evenings at the Villa’s restaurant, Dolce Vita, were just as transportive, with dinners on the open-air terrace under the stars featuring just-caught local Saint-Pierre fish and Provençal flavors that felt like the very essence of the Riviera.
I loved early morning swims, their tangerine-orange colored Méhari that whisked us into town whenever we liked, and sweeping sea views that stretched endlessly. Inside the hotel of frescoed walls, vintage rattan, sun-washed hues, and a bar encrusted with what looked like a trillion hues of coral and mother-of-pearl, Villa Marie was the best of both worlds: playful yet glamorous, secluded yet connected.
the silo hotel, South AFrica
At the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant V&A Waterfront, I fell under the spell of The Silo Hotel. Rising from a historic grain silo, Thomas Heatherwick’s bold architecture stopped me in my tracks—pillowed glass windows catch the light in a way that feels alive, framing Table Mountain and the Atlantic as if they were paintings hung just for you.
Stepping inside was like entering Liz Biden’s imagination. Her interiors are playful yet refined, filled with bold African art, jewel-toned fabrics, and whimsical details that made me smile. I love the way she tells stories through design—every chair, every canvas, every object feels chosen with intention. It is glamorous, but also deeply rooted in the spirit of South Africa.
And then there’s the rooftop pool. Where the city glows below as you float between two worlds—ocean and sky, nature and city. More than a hotel, The Silo is a living gallery and an unforgettable immersion into creativity and beauty. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
AFRICAN ISLANDS RoundUp
The continental mainland of Africa is becoming increasingly well known, but what about the islands that frame her majestic coastline? In the realm of the undiscovered, off-the-beaten-path, unspoiled, destined-to-over-deliver, these islands reign supreme. From celebrated destinations like the Seychelles and Zanzibar to lesser-known gems such as Madagascar, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Benguerra, there exists a paradise to fulfill every travel wish list.
Adrenaline seekers and wildlife lovers will be thrilled by Madagascar and St. Helena. Honeymooners can savor the Robinson Crusoe–esque lifestyle found in Mozambique and the Seychelles. For those drawn to the esoteric, São Tomé and Príncipe is exotic and almost otherworldly, while Zanzibar shines as a true melting pot—a crossroads of Arabian, Eastern, European, and Swahili cultures.
These islands can easily be woven into mainland itineraries or savored as stand-alone destinations. They are my personal happy places, and I return to them as often as I can. I would cherish the opportunity to guide you in experiencing these enigmatic beauties through the eyes of an insider.
