Safety FAQ
Q: What is the mobile coverage like throughout the course?
Mobile Communications is limited throughout the racecourse in certain areas. The two best networks are Bell Mobility and Rogers. For those individuals that have devices that support Satelite messaging from your mobile device it is a good opportunity. Many vendors in Canada are offering a free "beta" versions until the middle of October if you register.
Q: What are the helmet safety requirements in Canada?
In British Columbia, Canada - Mandatory helmet use while cycling is a legal requirement. Please remember to wear your helmet at tall times while travelling around the communities and the race course.
Q: What and where is the medical support on course?
In the spirit of expedition racing, the event is unsupported. Medical/First Aid teams are strategically positioned throughout the course to support if required, but their primary function is to monitor, provide advice and initiate first response activities. Teammates should be capable of supporting each other.
Q: What kind of water resources are there on course?
In most areas of the race course the water is very safe to drink - out of an abundance of caution all water should be treated/filtered.
Water at transitions will be marked in the Racer Guidebook.
Q: What can we expect for the climbing section?
Technical roping activities have been confirmed - racers should be proficient in abseiling/rappelling using the gear listed in the mandatory equipment. A technical traverse line will be established to help guide teams/athletes in difficult terrain.
Q: Can you tell us more about the SAR/Extraction Insurance?
All athletes are required to have personal SAR/Extraction insurance. For individuals who use a SPOT or Garmin devices where this subscription service has already been purchased the following will apply. (since you are required to activate your personal device for the insurance to be valid)
Please note…
**Expedition Canada/Hoodoo Adventure Co. Must be informed via email of your intent to use a personal existing device by writing to safetyteam@hoodooadventures.ca

**Your device emergency contact details must be changed to include safetyteam@hoodooadventures.ca, phone number (+1-204-228-1138)

**Your personal description in your profile must include narration, indicating you are participating in the Adventure Racing World Championships in British Columbia, Canada.

**When we seal your cell phones at the start you must bring the personal tracker. We will confirm the battery is full charged, we will turn it off and it will be sealed for the race. It will be checked at the end of the race to ensure it remains sealed.

**In the event of an emergency on the course - you are required to use the race provider tracker to initiate contact with the race organization. Once you contact the race organization, if we are able to make contact with you via cell phone, face to face contact or other means we will provide support and direction. If you are unable to make contact with race management and your situation continues to escalate to the point of requiring emergency services and immediate extraction. Then you should activate the race provided tracker AND your personal tracker.
*Rationale - the operating procedure for both devices is to validate the integrity of the alarm while concurrently notifying emergency services. Our community partners are aware of the event and we will work collaboratively with them to manage the situation.
