There is a current of energy that flows through all living things—an invisible thread weaving life together. In Japanese, it’s called Reiki—rei meaning “universal” and ki meaning “life energy.” When this current is strong, we feel balanced, vibrant, and at peace. When it’s depleted, we may feel drained, anxious, or unwell.
Reiki is a gentle practice of reconnecting with this universal flow. Through light touch or even intention at a distance, Reiki helps clear blockages, calm the nervous system, and remind the body of its innate ability to heal. It is not about forcing or fixing—it’s about allowing.
Think of Reiki as a river: if the stream is clogged with debris, the water can’t flow freely. Reiki gently removes the stones and twigs, restoring the current of life force. As Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, taught: “Healing is simple, as simple as the rain that falls and the sun that shines.”
Energy healing reminds us that wellness is not only physical, but also emotional, mental, and spiritual. When you invite Reiki energy in, you invite balance, harmony, and wholeness.
A Personal Reflection
I first heard of Reiki in the early 2000s during my life coaching training, when I met two women who were practitioners. Visiting them one weekend, they offered me a session so I could experience it for myself. I remember feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful, and held by something much greater than myself.
Although I had planned to be attuned to Reiki by them, I ended up waiting about a year and received my first attunement at a yoga center in Chester. During the practice portion of the training, something extraordinary happened: while receiving Reiki, I felt hands on my feet even after the practitioner had moved up toward my torso. When I peeked my eyes open, I saw she was indeed further up, yet the sensation of hands at my feet remained.
Later, in discussion with the teacher and other students, I learned that this wasn’t uncommon—many felt similar sensations of unseen presence. The teacher explained that guides, angels, and Reiki masters in spirit often assist in the process. That moment amazed me and confirmed that Reiki was more than a technique—it was a sacred partnership with the unseen world.
I was eager to continue, and soon went on to complete Levels 2 and 3 with another teacher. When I opened The Art of the Heart in Chester, I invited my friend Leona to teach Reiki with me. Together, we attuned many students across all three levels, and later I had the joy of co-teaching with Leslie as well.
One of Leslie and my favorite things a student ever said was that Reiki is an “accelerator.” It opens doors—raising vibration, awakening innate healing abilities, and connecting us more deeply with our true selves. Since 2009, it has been a profound blessing to attune others, witness their unfolding, and see Reiki become a key in their journey of healing and service. It continues to be one of the greatest joys of my path.
This week, invite Reiki into your life—even in its simplest form. Lay your hands gently on your heart, close your eyes, and breathe. Let universal energy flow through you like sunlight streaming into a window.
Over the past two decades, Reiki has been studied for its benefits and is now a common complementary practice in many hospitals and wellness centers. Across the world, practitioners are offering Reiki to those seeking balance, peace, and healing support.
Remember: you are not separate from healing energy—you are a vessel of it. Trust the flow.
If you feel called to explore Reiki more deeply, I offer both Reiki sessions and training for all levels. It is a joy and an honor to walk alongside others as they open to this universal energy.
In light,
Sue
