Happy (almost) fall! Blackberries begin to ripen on bushes, and deer feast on cherries and apples. Meanwhile, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Broad-winged Hawks are embarking on their migration south, but birds aren’t the only ones migrating; Monarch Butterflies begin their epic 3,000-mile migration to Mexico, and Common Green Darner Dragonflies fly 350 to 500 miles south. At the same time, female Praying Mantises lay their papery egg sacs. Keep an eye out for Brown Bats, who come out at night to eat insects. The 22nd brings the Fall Equinox, where we will see exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night before the days grow shorter.
