FAREWELL, SUMMER. Farewell, summer. The last of the cicadas call at dawn. And the wildflowers are almost gone. Except the goldenrod who has grown so tall; plumes reaching upward, summoning fall. Farewell, summer. The hornet’s hive no longer thrives; her papery pulp barely survives. Deconstructed combs blowing in the wind; little lacunas with nothing in. Farewell, wolf spider, who I no longer see lurking in her tree cavity. And to the hummingbirds who seldom fly… now that they’ve sipped all the jewel weed dry. Farewell, to the morning glory who quickly climbed, but brought no flowers with the passing of time. And to the idle, swollen, sultry heat, now replaced by a billowing breeze that beckons every acorn to suddenly drop; the leaves will start next, and they won’t stop. The sun sinks earlier every evening, and we will find a way to keep believing, but it is bittersweet that you are leaving… Farewell. ______ - From my new poetry book, “Tide" Read more & purchase here. |
