Happy Australia Day

What an amazing weekend of celebrations in the community. On Saturday it was wonderful to be at Cairns Central for their “Many Cultures, Many Beliefs-One Australia” event. Their flash mob of singers from many cultures singing ” We are One” was a tearjerker for many Australians.

We were then treated to some beautiful singing from the Austranesian group of singers and the big sausage cooking off! Thank you for creating a great event for us to show our pride.

Sunday Australia Day started at Holloways Beach with the brilliant team at Holloways Men’s Shed where we served free sausages to the community. Then it was off to the Cairns Citizen Ceremony where I witnessed 180 new citizens get sworn in, followed by the Munro Martin Park for their free family fun day.

I finished the day at Yorkeys Knob Boat Club for their Aussie Party.

Cardwell Flooding Update

This month I met with the Mayor of Cassowary Coast Terese Millwood, getting a report on recovery efforts in Silkwood, Mission Beach, Cardwell and Hinchinbrook.

It’s brought back a lot of memories of post Jasper in the Barron River electorate. These communities are resilient and doing well all things considered.
The Government agencies are doing a fantastic job on the ground. The SES and Rural Firies are doing a fantastic job hosing and cleaning out homes.

Thank you to everyone helping with the recovery efforts.

Game On at Barlow Park

The Crisafulli Government has unveiled $10.9 million worth of upgrades to shine a new light on Barlow Park, which will help in securing more professional televised sporting events to Cairns.

The upgrades include new broadcast quality lighting, and a large-screen replay scoreboard, enhancing the match-day experience for players and fans.
It’s a great opportunity for our local sporting clubs to get to play on the same grounds as their sporting heroes, which can be really inspiring for young kids!
