Cameron, a former student employee at the Auraria Sustainable Campus Program, asked, “Is coffee sustainable?"

The coffee industry at its core is not very sustainable, but there are many things you can do to help people and the planet:

Choose shade-grown Arabica coffee
Shade-grown coffee is more sustainable because it allows for more biodiversity! Sun-grown coffee involves mono-cropping, deforestation, and soil degradation.
Check labels and ask questions
Try to buy coffee that is labeled Fair Trade, Alliance, 4C, or Smithsonian Bird Friendly.
Bring a reusable mug!
Bringing your reusable coffee mug can significantly reduce waste and you might even get a discount at your local coffee shop!
Try an alternative milk!
Plant-based milk has one-third of the climate impact of dairy milk.
Switch to tea (even if it’s only for a couple days a week)!
A cup of coffee uses almost ten times more water than the same amount of tea (37 gallons for 4.2 ounces of coffee). Try switching it up and shrinking your carbon footprint!
