We have had an update from the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF), which is working to prevent huge dry-season fires in Sebangau National Park, Borneo’s largest peat-swamp forest. A globally important carbon store, the forest holds the world’s largest protected population of critically endangered Bornean orangutans. The drained peatland, damaged and degraded by years of illegal logging, means fires spread quickly and are extremely difficult to extinguish.
Funding from EOCA has enabled the building of 20 new dams along one illegal logging canal, rewetting peatland and impacting 760 hectares. Aiming to build its highest number of dams in a single year, and attracting further funds, thanks to EOCA's support, BNF is currently celebrating having built a total of 1 000 dams to date, resulting in the closure of 36 canals.
Built from natural materials, seedlings are also planted on top of the dam walls, so that when the dams eventually rot, the seedlings will have grown enough to form a living, natural dam.
