As the season changes, and as my own season of life shifts, I find myself drawn to simplicity more than ever. I’m gathering what the garden freely gives: dried hydrangeas with their antique blush, sculptural allium seed heads, clusters of rose hips, and graceful birch branches. These natural treasures become my autumn dĆ©cor, weaving together the inside of our home and the cottage garden outside. The muted colors and organic shapes tell a quiet story of beauty and abundance without clutter.
Ā
Welcome to our cozy corner of Connecticut (Zone 6b), where the garden meets the cottage and autumn wraps everything in golden light. Come on in,there’s pumpkin bread in the oven and a trail of fallen leaves leading you from the parterre to the hearth.Ā
fRONT WALK & pORCH: GREEN & WHITE HARVEST
Image item
This year I chose soft green and creamy white pumpkins, echoing the silvery foliage and Connecticut bluestone along the walk. The muted palette lets the garden’s textures and architecture shine, with dried hydrangeas tucked into the planter for subtle color. At the door, a wicker cornucopia spills over with allium seed heads, hydrangeas, and rose hips, adding quiet richness without overwhelming.

KITCHEN: WARMTH, COPPER & PUMPKIN BREAD
Image item
In autumn, the kitchen becomes the heart of the home. Pumpkin bread cools on a wire rack, its sweet spice filling the cottage. Copper accents shine, a breadboard with a vintage print leans behind the range, and a bowl brims with figs beside a waiting kettle. On the counter, the sugar-dusted loaf is ready to share, while a blue-and-white pitcher of dahlias brightens the space. In the dining room, natural dƩcor glows softly in the early evening light.

Old Castle Cottage Pumpkin Bread
Ā
Here’s my go-to recipe for a moist, fragrant pumpkin bread, simple to make and perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or a late-night treat.
Ā
Ingredients
1 cup pumpkin puree (canned or homemade)
2 large eggs
½ cup neutral oil (such as safflower or vegetable)
½ cup water
1 ½ cups granulated sugar (or half white, half brown)
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
Ā
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Grease and lightly flour a standard loaf pan.
2. Combine wet ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk pumpkin, eggs, oil, water, and sugar until smooth.
3. Combine dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and
spices.
4. Mix gently: Add dry ingredients to wet, stirring just until combined. Do not
overmix.
5. Bake: Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a
toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6. Cool and enjoy: Let rest in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

Living Room: Cottage Layers Without Clutter
Image item
To continue on simplicity, I decided not to swap out pillows instead I just added one soft fur pillow to add a warmer texture, and traded fresh peonies for dried hydrangeas from the garden. Think ā€œsoft and collected.ā€ On the mantel: asymmetrical brass candlesticks, mirror and a bust head planter filled the things I foraged from the garden. I also include a photo of our library mantel below. Try this: Replace one bright summer print with a moody landscape to instantly shift the season.

Our new custom garden gate sets the tone, I just love it give my eye a place to rest and was a great addition and our urn is planted for fall: anemones, sedum ā€˜Autumn Joy’, and trailing creeping jenny. I tucked in cold-tolerant annuals, violas, dusty miller, and heuchera for texture. A simple wreath on the greenhouse and the garden is ready for fall.
Ā
Design tip: Mix one thriller (upright grass), two fillers (sedum + heuchera), and one spiller creeping Jenny or (ivy) per pot for effortless balance. Blog post with container recipes here.
