From Lost to Found: A Story for Animal Lovers
When someone read an article about how I had helped find missing animals, I received a call that cracked something open inside me.
It wasn’t just about the dog.

It was about every part of ourselves that knows we’re connected to something bigger — and dares to act on it.

“I’m absolutely desperate,” the woman said. “Her name’s Bunny. She’s a German Shepherd. I can’t get around well… I found your name in Grit magazine. You do find missing pets, don’t you?”

Her name was Sue.
And her heartbreak was spilling through the phone line.
“I’ll do whatever I can to help,” I told her.
My body stayed in Budd Lake, New Jersey.
But something else — what I call my essence — was already gone.
Swept away, like wind on the move.

Seconds after speaking to Sue, I found myself seeing through the eyes of a dog. A beautiful German Shepherd. Not Bunny, but mine — from many years earlier.

That memory opened like a portal.

🐶 1968, Puerto Rico

I was pregnant, living in Puerto Rico with my husband, Dr. Gilbert Arnold Preston, who was conducting research on split-brain function. Our daughter had just been born.

One day, my OB/GYN — a Navy physician — called me.
“Would you be willing to take in a 5-month-old German Shepherd? My kids have been rough with him. He’s starting to bite.”
I said yes, knowing full well what that might mean.
I wrapped towels around my hands in preparation.
But when he bit, he got a mouthful of terry cloth — and a voice full of empathy.

I spoke to him not with anger, but with sorrow.
Sorrow for what he had been through.
He calmed.
He trusted.
We bonded instantly.
He didn’t need training — he needed love.

And from the start, he and my three-month-old daughter were inseparable.

🧭 Why This Matters — and What It Shows Us

That moment with Sue — where I dropped into another state, felt something, saw something — it wasn’t just “psychic.”

It was a reminder of what happens when we allow ourselves to feel something deeply and act on it.

When we do that, we are telling ourselves, our bodies, our minds:
“Yes. This matters. This is a thread worth pulling.”
And when we pull that thread, we begin to weave something larger than ourselves:
  • A deeper soul connection.
  • A finer intuition.
  • A trust in our place within the entire web of life.
This is not about being “right.”
It’s about being willing.

Willing to try. Willing to help. Willing to believe that maybe, just maybe, we can make a difference.

And that — truly — is all that matters.

🐾 A Challenge for Animal Lovers (That Means You)

If you’ve ever:
  • Wept over a rescue story
  • Opened your home to a stray
  • Prayed for a missing pet’s return
Then you already know how sacred this work is.
So I challenge you to step in.

Here’s how:

💬 Share this story with someone who loves animals
🤝 Volunteer with a rescue group, shelter, or animal hospice
📚 Read & share the rescue chapter in Nature Speaks
🧡 Trust what you feel when you see an animal in need — and act on it.

What we do may not always be big.
But it will always matter.
And when it’s done with love, it comes back to us — sometimes in ways we never expected.
