Pulling this episode together was quite alot of fun, but also trickier than I anticipated.

There are SO many different examples, stories and experiences you can draw on when writing and talking about workplace jerk behaviour - it was hard finding a way to fit everything in without making it 5 hours long. Here's where I landed…

The episode covers:
  • The Different types of jerks at work ~ essentially the 3 key jerk archetypes as I see them
  • Tools for dealing with jerks at work ~ the approaches and interpersonal skills that can help you manage most kinds of jerks
  • And Different jerk scenarios ~ including when YOU are the jerk (which I definitely have been at times)

What if your direct report is a jerk?

When listening back I realised I missed a clanger - what to do when your direct report is a jerk. This type of jerk can be a little easier to manage given the power dynamic, but beware a major blind spot - when they manage UP (to you) but treat their peers and juniors badly.
I've experienced this and can definitely say that building trust in your team and having a safe and open dialogue will help you avoid these kinds of jerks pulling that behaviour on your watch.

The episode also includes some self-coaching questions towards the end, to help you navigate your own jerk at work situations.

In London, it felt like the temperature dropped on 1 September and summer was a distant memory overnight. The leaves are turning crimson now, and the layers and heating are well and truly back on. I hope your September brought you a sense of hope and renewal and that good things come your way throughout October.

That's all for now First name / Rewriter, wishing you a gorgeous rest of your week.
Monique xx
