Dear Sunday Sparker,

Are you an overthinker?
Most people answer "Yes."

That's why author Jon Acuff wrote a book a few years ago called Soundtracks. Soundtracks are repetitive thoughts you have that shape your life. Soundtracks you listen to can only be two types: Broken or helpful. Broken soundtracks are ideas you have about yourself or the world that are not serving you.

How do you know if your soundtracks are broken?

You ask three questions:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it helpful?
  • Is it kind?

An example of a soundtrack you might have: "Money does not come easily into my life (I chose a money one since we're trying to work on this aspect according to my calendar)

Let's test this soundtrack with the three questions:

  • Is it true? Perhaps your past experiences have repeatedly shown you that Money doesn't flow into your life easily. You lack evidence of gifts or serendipities that helped you have Money. Perhaps you think it is true, so let's move to the following question:
  • Is it helpful? How do you feel when you think this thought? Does it encourage you or discourage you? Does it make you get up and go get Money? Or just compare yourself to people who seem to have it easier when it comes to Money? The answer is no, it is not helpful.
  • Is it kind? Let's imagine you saying this soundtrack to your friend. What kind of friend would you be if you said it? So, why is it okay to say it to yourself? No, it is not kind.

The verdict: The thought "Money does not come easily to my life" is a broken soundtrack.

What to do with broken soundtracks?

According to Jon:
"There are three actions to change your thoughts from a super problem into a superpower:
  1. Retire your broken soundtracks.
  2. Replace them with new ones.
  3. Repeat them until they're as automatic as the old ones."

One way to replace a broken soundtrack is to flip it on its head: "Money comes easily to my life". Or use a favorite soundtrack that Jon once shared in a QA session I attended: "People are trying to give me money." It's about being open to receiving this Money through opportunities that present themselves to you that you would not otherwise notice.

Today's message to you: We need to do the hard work of noticing our thoughts and choosing better ones every day.

Gretchen Rubin often shares this quote from G. K. Chesterton: "It's easy to be heavy, hard to be light." I love this quote because it reminds me that our human brain finds negativity easier; it's how it survived for millennia. We scan our environment and people for threats. Threats of danger and abandonment. That look from your boss could mean the end of your career, your brain concludes. Seeing red lights all the way to work is a sign that the day will probably be terrible. It's easy to hear these thoughts, believe them, and act on them. It is hard to do the work of choosing your thoughts and the soundtracks you will listen to today.

A powerful soundtrack that I learned from Jon along the same lines: Fear Comes Free. Hope Takes Work.

Are you willing to do the work? Are you willing to choose new soundtracks that will uplift you today and every day?

I hope the answer is an astounding YES!

Snapshot from my week: Master Your Focus for High Performance Training
with Ahli Bank Employees 👋

Here is your weekly dose of The Sunday Spark ⚡️a newsletter listing 3 sparks that I thought were worth starting your week with :

1. ⏰ 📕 (Time Sensitive) Author Derek Sivers sent me an intriguing email: "For ONE WEEK ONLY (now til October 18) I'm giving away ALL MY BOOKS FOR FREE, here. That includes all audiobooks and eBook formats too. Why? Because I want you to read them (or hear them) and gift them." I took him on his offer, and it's true! I don't know which book to recommend you start with first! I have read them all and gifted some of them when he made a generous offer a few years ago. His writing is excellent, and his podcast interviews are even more impressive. He is a unique thinker and writer. If you read on the Kindle app, download the ePUB versions. Here is a favorite post he wrote that encourages me to keep writing and sharing my writing more publicly, such as on a blog.

2. 📂 Are you still using WeTransfer? They changed their T&C (and walked back from the change in August 2025), and since then I started using Swiss Transfer, which allows transferring files up to 50 GB, valid for one month.

 3. 💬 💸 Your money mindset quote of the week (Aligned with my calendar's theme of the month)::
“If you pay with resentment, money has a hard time coming back to you. If you pay with love and joy, you open the free-flowing channel of abundance.”
— Louise Hay

P.S. Let’s chat if you are considering hiring me to guide you towards your goals and positive habits in 1-1 sessions (1 Spot available for the month of October and it could be you!) or to train your team about the science of effective planning through goal setting, building habits, mastering time management for better performance and productivity, or the art of  beating burnout.
Reply to this email, and we can start from there.

Before you go, here are some cool resources I personally use, love and recommend:
