Many of us know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. For me it was my mom- she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. While she is currently in remission, it took a double mastectomy and years of treatment to get here. Thankfully, her diagnosis was caught fairly early. She told me “I almost didn't go to my mammogram because no one in my family has breast cancer…and I just didn't really feel like going." I'm writing this in hopes that it resonates with someone and urges them to make the appointment or keep an appointment for screening.
Unfortunately, breast cancer rates are increasing by approximately 1% every year. In the United States, the average risk of a woman developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 13%. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer.
Early detection and changing risk factors within your control can make significant differences.
