Tell us more. Why are you stepping back from Jacaranda Tree Montessori?

I always thought I’d stop working in the classroom when I became a grumpy Montessori teacher. So it even surprised me when, one day before the summer, I had a quiet, peaceful knowing that it was time to step back. I had a tear in my eye - it was a happy/sad moment.

Happy, because we have built something so beautiful here in Amsterdam: a community of like-minded families who take time each week to come to class with their child and learn alongside them. Sad, because I still adore working with all the families and sharing my love of Montessori. Jacaranda Tree Montessori has been such a huge part of my life since I opened it back in 2008.

So I get to leave the classroom on a high - not as a grumpy Montessori teacher - but with my heart full and feeling very peaceful. I share this as so many decisions we make because we are scared, we are burnt out, or unwell. And we can also make decisions from a sweet, calm place inside us.

What will you do next?

First, I’ll take a little break, visit my dad in Australia for his 80th birthday, and then we’ll see! I have lots of projects in mind, so who knows where it will lead.

What I do know is that whatever I choose to do in the next chapter of my working life, I’ll bring Montessori with me. After 22 years, it has become a way of being - a way of living. I’m excited to see what unfolds.

How did you meet Yuliya?

I met Yuliya back in 2012 when she attended classes at Jacaranda Tree Montessori with her son Matthew, and again a few years later with Mark. From the start, she stood out as someone who is naturally Montessori and she was always eager to learn more. She has raised her children (now 14 and 8) in a Montessori way and brings that same spirit to her work with children.

When I decided to step back, Yuliya was the first and only person I reached out to. I asked if she was still interested in starting her own Montessori playgroup. Her reply: “Yes, still interested! Now even more than ever :-)

And now…

We’ve been running the current course together, and it’s going even better than I could have hoped. With her big smile and warm heart, Yuliya has been so warmly welcomed by the families and children.

In November, I'll be stepping back to two days a week and Yuliya will be running all the sessions. For the last week of this course - the last week of November - I'll of course be in class each day to say good bye to the families. Then from the start of the new course in December, Yuliya will be running the show. I'll be dropping in from time to time so you are sure to still see me around. If you have any questions please let me know.

I feel completely confident in this next evolution of Jacaranda Tree Montessori and want to wish Yuliya all the very best as she takes over my little baby. I’m leaving you all in the best hands.

And I’m going to miss you so much. I’m tearing up just writing this. Thank you, everyone, for helping me grow and for all I’ve learned from you. This community truly is the best. 💛

I’ll still be sharing about Montessori over on Instagram here. I'm still planning to send my monthly newsletters but it will be via The Montessori Notebook. So it’s not goodbye for now, but til soon…

And hello Yuliya!

Here's a little interview with Yuliya so you can get to know her…

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I have truly enjoyed getting to know you and your children over the past few months, so now here is a little about me.

My name is Yuliya, and I will be turning 43 in a few weeks. I was born and raised in Ukraine, then moved to the US in 2006 to be with my husband. In 2009, his work brought us to Amsterdam for what was meant to be one year - and 17 years later, we still proudly call Amsterdam our home. Two years ago, we moved to Amstelveen, where we enjoy a peaceful life with our two boys. Raising them I have learned so much, especially about raising neurodivergent children.

When I am not in the classroom, I have a lot of fun playing padel, I love that I have a small garden now to tend too, and I get so much joy seeing Matthew pursue his love of competitive swimming and Mark’s passion for artistic gymnastics and diving (even if it means helping them get to early trainings and weekends of sport.)

2. What do you love about Montessori?

I am passionate about the Montessori approach, driven by my deep love for nature and young children. Nothing brings me more joy than watching children acquire new skills through repetition and practice, mastering concepts that they later seamlessly integrate into their daily lives.

One of my favourite moments in class this week was seeing a child proudly using the scissors, repeating the process 3 times, and then putting the small pieces into an envelope. It was just 3 weeks ago that I showed him how to open and close the scissors.

I cherish the moments when I see parents amazed by their children's capabilities, nurturing their trust and belief in their little ones.

3. How did you first fall in love with Montessori?

When I, a young expat mom, brought my baby boy to his first class at Jacaranda Tree, I had little knowledge of Montessori, but there was no turning back after that. Under Simone's gentle guidance, I immersed myself in this enriching world. The more I learned, the clearer everything became, reinforcing my commitment to this educational approach.

A pivotal figure in my journey was Simone, who inspired me to pursue my dreams to work in Montessori. Years later, even after all the trainings and completing my AMI assistant training in London, I still remember and cherish Simone's presentations.

4. Anything else you would like to share?

Just that I feel incredibly honored to uphold the legacy of Jacaranda Tree, dedicating myself to serving the community and sharing the magic of Montessori education with the next generation.

See you in class!

I hope lots of you will join us for our Introduction to Montessori evening next Tuesday 14 October. It will be a lovely chance to meet Yuliya and to explore the foundations of Montessori together.

And that's it for today everyone. And we'll be back in your inboxes soon with more Montessori inspiration. Til then…

Sending much love,
Simone (& Yuliya) x
