The new Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 bans anyone under 16 from using social media, and forces everyone over 16 to prove their age through ID, facial scans, or behavioural tracking.

 

The government’s own trials showed these systems don’t work. Every method failed on privacy, accuracy, and accessibility. Yet the law passed anyway — after just one day of public consultation.
