Pleasure Club

In Pleasure Club this week we talked about our Bodies as Objects.  Since the day you were born, your body has been compared to "things." We are "snacks," "pieces of meat" and "eye candy."  We are "trophy wives," "plucked flowers' and "brick houses."  The beauty industry treats us like collectables to "pluck, polish and tighten." Society wants us to be mannequins - to "smile more" but God, don't let your body be a "distraction."

Our whole lives are spent, whether we know it or not, internalizing these messages about our bodies.  In our meeting we talked about what to do with these messages.  How to be yourself in a world that constantly wants you to be different.

I was incredibly inspired by the conversation we had in Pleasure Club about ways in which each of the women manage the messages from the outside world.  Where I said I hardly wear prints because I don't want more attention on my tall frame, another woman said she likes loud colors, because it drew attention to her outfit, not her body.  We also talked about how we engage with the beauty industry on some level in order to protect ourselves from negative messages.  And last but not least, sometimes we do the opposite of "conventional beauty standards" in order in the name of rebellion.  (Purple hair?  Yes please!)

If these are the kind of supportive, loving, fun conversations you have been missing in your life, please consider joining Pleasure Club.  You can join just for a month...a few months or save a bit of money and join for the year.  You would be a fabulous addition to our conversations.
