An Auraria Campus student asked, “How can I have a more sustainable commute to campus?” Walking and biking are the most sustainable ways to commute by far. Using a bike instead of a car for short distances would reduce emissions by 75% (Our World in Data). However, active transportation is not accessible to everyone. E-bikes and e-scooters can be great options. In fact, e-bikes have the potential to take 8 million cars off the road (ITDP). Although they can be expensive for students, Denver has an e-bike rebate program to help close that gap.

Taking the bus or train is also one of the most sustainable ways to commute. In the US, it saves 37 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually (Our World in Data). You can check out the RTD website or app to find the closest route to you. Keep an eye out for upcoming projects in Denver to make your commute even more efficient, such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) (City and County of Denver). And remember: the more people on the bus, the more sustainable the trip.

Electric cars are another alternative option to single-occupancy gas-powered cars. Even factoring in the process of creating batteries, electric vehicles still produce less CO2 than combustion engine cars (MIT). However, lithium-ion batteries are more resource-intensive than traditional engines. The batteries are considered hazardous waste at the end of their life cycle, and the recycling process is still being researched for the long term. If successful, recycling could help meet the demand without additional mining.

Carpooling and car sharing are other options if driving is essential for your commute. Check out our blog for more information and local resources. You can reduce your carbon footprint by implementing some alternatives, even if it's not every day! Happy commuting!
