Last week I mentioned briefly what is happening with me health wise. Well this week I had a lesson in humility and changing perspective. On Tuesday I had to go to Weeks Hospital for a wheelchair/mobility assessment with the Director of the Rehab Department, Scott and with Colin from the National Seating and Mobility.

When meeting with them and discussing my mobility issues and the condition with my spine and more importantly seeing the mobility chair in front of me I all of a sudden felt defeated and started to get emotional. For my perspective of the chair was that I was giving up all hope that my condition could improve.

Scott, the Director of the Rehab Department at Weeks asked me what the emotion was and I told him. He gently touched my hand and said “it isn't defeat it is adapting. You are adapting to your condition so you can have quality of life. You are not quitting or giving up, but giving yourself the tools you need to continue to be productive.”

When he said that to me something shifted inside of me and realized he was right. I wasn't giving up, I am adapting and that helped me to change my perspective. I no longer saw the chair as an enemy but rather a tool to help me have a better quality of life.

This chair will allow me to enjoy the outdoors again, especially the hiking trails for the disabled. The chair will help me to be more productive at home, it lifts up so you can do dishes, or food prep at the counter or even be at the stove cooking, which I have not been able to do for years due to the pain I have when standing for more than five-minutes.

Because of Scott I no longer see the wheelchair as my enemy, but a tool for possibilities. I am so grateful for Scott and his wisdom. I have had to change my perspective a lot throughout my life and every time I do the situation always improves.

Are there things in your life you need to change the perspective of? Is there something you are seeing as a negative that could actually be a positive if you looked at it differently?

Changing your perspective will actually change the energy around the situation you may be dealing with. I went from feeling heavy and defeated to feeling hopeful and even a little excited to get my new chair.

So, before you react about something maybe see if you can see it in a completely different light. Change your perspective!
