Does anyone else do this?

Something really good happens.

You’re excited, you’re happy, things are working out for you.

But then… you start to panic.

Things are going tooooo well.

And you can’t help but worry if it’ll all come crashing down.

I’m gonna be real with you guys…

I went on a date and it went well.

Like really really well.

We’re so similar, have loads in common, I was laughing the whole date, the best date I’ve been on in a long time.

And as much as I’m trying to play it cool.

I don’t want to get my hopes up.

And just in case you’re wondering no, he doesn’t read these emails.

(I double checked!)

I’m weirdly preparing myself for the worst, so I don’t get let down.

He seems awesome but I keep thinking…
  • Don’t get too excited.
  • What if it all comes crashing down.
  • It was only a first date, don’t get your hopes up.
Then it got me thinking.

Too many of us are afraid to get our hopes up.

  • You’re scared your health test results will come back clear.
  • You’re scared to imagine passing the interview and getting the job.
  • You’re scared to get excited about passing your exam in case you don’t
  • You’re scared to imagine the early stages of a relationships working out incase it doesn’t.
  • You’re scared.

I once heard Peter Crone say “Fear breaks it’s own heart”.

As a kid if we learn that optimism will end in disappointment. Or hope ends in rejection.

We start to choose safety.

Our fear would rather we had a guaranteed misery than the misery of uncertainty.

Psychologists calls this catastrophic thinking, when we imagine the worst to protect ourselves.

Let’s be honest: anticipating the worst, doesn’t prepare you for the worst.

It simply robs you of joy.

We can’t get rid of fear in our lives.

But we can stop it from robbing us of joy.

So start small.

  • Let yourself get excited.
  • Let yourself rest without guilt.
  • Let yourself have fun without worrying about your to do list.
  • Let yourself dream, even if you don’t know how you’ll get there.

Up until now pain may have shaped you, but it doesn’t have to define what’s possible for you.

You deserve a life that’s bigger than what hurt you.

What are you getting your hopes up for this week?
Much love,
