I tend to go from one thing to the next, ready to jump into the excitement of a new project--can you relate? While I don't think it's a bad thing to be forward thinking and enthusiastic, over the years I've learned about the importance of taking the time to pause and process and to think of the positives and lessons learned before moving on. This week marks one month of exploring different themes and cultivating our creative practice which is amazing! For our final prompt, I thought we could sit with the idea of reflection as we close out these past 4 weeks. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have--thank you for joining me here! Wherever you are in this process--if you've joined recently (welcome!) or you're caught up or somewhere in the middle, keep going, jump back in, or work at the pace that feels good to you right now. Don't forget the prompts are suggestions and you have the freedom to use them as you see fit. And lastly, don't forget to have fun :) |

WARM UP EXERCISE TO TRY THIS WEEK… A Writing Prompt Warm up this week with words: which prompt did you enjoy and why? What did you learn from it / about your art / yourself? This can be a quick exercise: taking 5 minutes to jot down some quick notes and ideas or spend 20 minutes writing whatever comes into your mind after reflecting on this prompt. When you're done, you can use this page as a background layer, paint on top of it, rip it out and tear it into strips to use in a collage, cut out sentences you like to keep or include in this week's piece. |

ENVISION & EXPRESS - Create a self portrait. Every year I encourage everyone to create a self portrait--and it might be the idea that people like the least! Mostly because it feels intimidating to draw a realistic likeness of yourself--which I can relate to. But before you skip over this, take a look at all the different ways you can create a self portrait!
- It does not have to be an exact replica, you can play around with photographs, your silhouette, words, and so much more.
- I also think it's worth trying to do a sketch--even a quick one. You might surprise yourself!
- Another way to make it easier is to try drawing half of your face or just your eyes and feature one part.
- I love the idea of creating one each year than flipping through all the past portraits! Give it a try :)
- Reflect on the past prompts. Was there one you really connected with and had more ideas you wanted to try? Was there a technique or piece that you made and like and want to try again or expand on? Take time this week to do that. Find all the past prompts here.
- How has your style and way of creating changed and evolved since you started? For some of us that might be going all the way back to our earliest memories or it could be as recent as last month when you started! Take some time to look at the aspects of your work that you love and continue to connect with--we are usually so critical but I think it's important to appreciate the parts we are proud of. Consider where you'd like to go in the future--what do you want to learn more about or try?
- Use the aspects that you love about the way you create to make one piece highlighting that
- Dive into what you want to explore now! If you're not sure where to start, go to the library and check out a book on it or find a tutorial to follow.
- If you have photos of your work over the years, print some of them out and make a visual timeline / collage.
