How does this quote make you feel?

“Creativity is the most universally available commodity” – Susan Orlean

I came across it recently and I found it so inspiring…and incredibly true.

Creativity is beautifully, universally accessible. It’s also sort of a great equalizer, don’t you think?

You don’t need fancy tools, a perfect studio, an endless budget, or even hours of uninterrupted time to be creative, because creativity is part of you. It’s part of all of us.

It’s something you practice in small, intentional ways, and it doesn’t even have to be about making, producing, or delivering something. Creativity is just as much about the process of noticing and allowing space for ideas to find you and to grow through your nurturing.

Creativity isn’t reserved for artists, designers, or makers.

It’s a resource we can all use as much as we want.

And the best part is that the more you allow creativity into your life, the more available it becomes to you.

If this speaks to you the way it spoke to me, I encourage you to to notice and acknowledge the creative aspects of yourself:

Everyday problem solving is creativity.

Like when you don’t have everything you need to make the recipe for dinner tonight, so you improvise.

That’s creativity in action.

Play is creativity.

Being spontaneous or curious, exploring, joking around…it’s all creativity in action.

Observing is creativity.

Noticing things like how things are designed and the way they fit into your lifestyle like when you can’t get rid of a water bottle because you love the way it looks, or you shop at a specific store because the layout makes sense to your brain.

If you think about the why, those observations are creativity in action.

Storytelling is creativity.

It’s everywhere when you start paying attention. Think about how ideas are presented in TV and film. Ask why you connect so strongly to a song.

Those thoughts are creativity in action.

A Creativity Awareness Challenge
Creativity is everywhere, and as the quote I found suggests, it’s universally available to every last one of us.

So how can you tap into your creative supplies?

As a designer who does creative work for a living, I have a simple challenge anyone can try:

→ For a few days, take a notebook with you everywhere and jot down what you notice. (Remember that noticing is creativity in action.)
→ Watch for innovation, unique problem solving angles, noise and patterns around you.
→ Record your thoughts, reactions, and instinctual responses to what you notice.

The more you start to tap into the abundant creative resources around you, the more you can encourage your supply of creativity to grow.

Here’s to living our creative truths with intention.

REMEMBER:
The more you allow creativity into your life, the more available it becomes to you.
