Dear First name / Sunday Sparker

Are you taking any days off before the year ends?

Is it quiet where you work, or is it chaotic?

As many of my colleagues and I are about to take our annual vacations and the workplace is getting too quiet, I am here today to remind you of a technique I've shared many times around here.

It’s a technique that people thank me most for after learning it from my podcast. For the curious minds, I learned this technique from author Charlie Gilkey in the wonderful book Start Finishing.

I use it every day before leaving work, before going on vacations, and before starting weekends.

You can use it before a new season starts, before traveling for the summer or Christmas, before the holy month of Ramadan, or even before you deliver your baby.

Excited to know what it is?

🥁🥁🥁

Leave a breadcrumb trail.

You know that famous children’s fairy tale about two children who left a trail to come back to their house whenever their stepmother tried to leave them in the forest?

The forest is the chaos of your life; in the midst of it, you forget your priorities and your progress. In the forest of daily life, your tasks, goals, and habits fade from your memory unless you leave yourself some trail.  A trail of notes.
Leave notes for your future self that answer something along the following questions:

  • What are the top three tasks you want to work on the next working day, whether it is next Sunday or the first day after returning from a vacation?
  • What routines don't you want to forget about? Example: You love waking up super early to write in your favorite journal, but that doesn't work unless you go to bed by 10pm. Or perhaps you don’t want to forget that Monday traffic is the worst, so you need to leave earlier than usual.
  • What do you hope to return to doing when you get back to the usual routines? An example is that you love to walk after you finish cooking.

People in my community are getting better and better at returning to routines after vacations because they are leaving themselves better notes.

Need more examples?
Here are some:

At work:

  • Before you leave work every day, leave yourself notes of what tasks to work on first thing the next day
  • When you close an Excel sheet that you haven’t finished working on leave yourself notes on what to do next time you open it.
  • For reports that you do on a quarterly basis, leave yourself instructions on what to do next time you do the report.

End of School/Before Summer Vacation:

  • Write yourself some notes about good habits you currently have.
  • Write when you sleep and when you wake up for school, and when you leave home to drive your kids on time.
  • Leave yourself home tasks to do after you get back.

End of Year Vacation:

  • Write one task to do when you first come back to work,
  • Write your key projects for the new year on a piece of cardboard and keep it in front of you.
  • Clear your desk of all reminders and Post-it notes, and put them in a processing box for later. (Pro tip: throw them if you didn’t miss them in a few weeks.
  • Do some decluttering for your drawers and empty your inbox of old emails.

Help yourself build momentum and start your next round of habits and goals faster by leaving detailed breadcrumbs.

Thank me later.

P.S. This is the time to book me for a goal-setting training! Let’s chat if you are considering hiring me to train your team on the art of setting and achieving goals in a full-day or half-a-day workshop.

Start Finishing

Breadcrumb trail

Snapshot from my week:
I had a great time attending the launch of the new book by Dana Abu Khader
Congrats Dana!
Order the book here. A perfect Christmas gift.

Here is your weekly dose of The Sunday Spark ⚡️a newsletter listing 3 sparks that I thought were worth starting your week with:

1. 📕 Few days ago, when I was decluttering my shelves (part of my 100-day challenge) I found this magnificent document that I printed years ago and forgot about, which was curated by Seth Godin. He first shared What Matters e-book here and I remembered that he also encouraged to share it widely, so here I am, years later, sharing it with you. The content is still relevant and will light a bulb you didn't know was off.

2.  😂 Adulting is Easy! Just follow this simple 100-step daily checklist. This post cracked me up! I love how nerdy we are.

 3. 💬 "When you are setting a goal, by all means engage in lots of positive thinking about how likely you are to achieve it. Believing in your ability to succeed is enormously helpful for creating and sustaining your motivation. But whatever you do, don’t underestimate how difficult it will be to reach your goal. Most goals worth achieving require time, planning, effort, and persistence. Studies show that thinking things will come to you easily and effortlessly leaves you ill prepared for the journey ahead and significantly increases the odds of failure"

Before you go, here are some cool resources I personally use, love and recommend:
  1. PRODUCTIVITY HACK 🎯⚡Tired of opening 12 tabs every morning just to get your day started? I've been using Momentum Plus as my browser homepage - it's like having a personal assistant that shows me my mantra, weather, to-do list, and even tracks time zones so I don't accidentally wake up my friend in Australia at 3 AM. Newsletter readers get 10% off with this link.
  2. 📙 Can you believe I have been using this amazing gratitude journal since 2017? Here is a link to an Instagram highlight I did about it so you can see it from the inside. You get 10% off when you order using my code: Bardeespodcast10.
