Starbucks new protein drinks: worth the hype?
Have you seen the new Starbucks protein drinks?! They launched in both Protein Lattes and Protein Cold Foam back in September and made quite a splash. So let’s dive a little deeper and look at the pros and cons. Starbucks is mixing 2% dairy milk with unflavored whey protein isolate (plus sunflower-derived lecithin for mixability) to create their “protein-boosted milk”. The Protein Cold Foam incorporates the same whey protein isolate base in flavors like banana, vanilla, chocolate, matcha, salted caramel, brown sugar, plain, and other seasonal options.
Pros - what did they get right?
The protein content! It can be difficult to meet your protein goals each day, so adding an extra ~27-36 grams of protein from a Protein Latte is a macro-win! This helps keep blood sugar more stable (especially when consuming a sugary coffee drink) and can help keep you full longer.
Whey protein is a complete protein, unlike other protein sources like collagen. So you are getting all 9 essential amino acids…aka the ones your body can’t make.
It’s customizable. You can sub the protein-boosted milk or the protein cold foam to any drink to give you that boost of protein.
Cons - things to consider?
Dairy/whey: the drinks use 2% milk + whey protein isolate, so for clients with dairy intolerance, lactose sensitivity, or those whose gut can’t tolerate whey, this wouldn’t be a good option.
Although you can boost the protein, a lot of Starbucks drinks are LOADED with added sugar. It is recommended to keep added sugar below 25 grams per day for women and 36 grams per day for men. A Grande Iced Vanilla Cream Protein Latte has 26 grams of protein, 390 calories, and 25 grams of added sugar…your entire amount of sugar for the day in 1 beverage.
Cost: these upgrades cost more and can really add up if this is a regular occurrence in your routine.
My overall take is that if you can tolerate dairy/whey, this is a great addition to an occasional Starbucks drink to balance the macros and keep your blood sugar and mood more stable. But just like other sweet things in life, they should be occasional and not the foundation for a healthy, balanced diet.
