SLOW IN SOUTHAMPTON
Why we always build buffer days before a cruise
Before we ever rolled our luggage to the port, we gave ourselves five days in Southampton — not to sightsee like crazy, but to land, breathe, and ease into travel again.
We’ve learned the hard way that flying in the day before a cruise is a gamble. A short buffer takes the pressure off — if flights are delayed or jet lag hits, we’re still fine. And by the time the ship sails, we’re already in “slow mode.”
Southampton turned out to be perfect for that kind of reset. It’s walkable, right near the port, and surrounded by easy day trips. We did a few (Stonehenge, Isle of Wight, Bournemouth), grabbed good coffee, got our bearings, and remembered what it’s like to just live somewhere new.
Those “in-between” days might not look exciting on paper, but they make a huge difference — mentally, logistically, and even financially. You settle in before the adventure begins.
