Anyway, I had one of those moments this week, and it honestly kept me sad longer than usual to the point where I started looking at full-time jobs (which was depressing in itself — anyone who’s been job hunting can probably relate).
But then I had a moment where I told myself, Girl, you’ve felt like this before — and it’s always temporary.
You always bounce back. So why aren’t you bouncing?
That’s when I remembered: the best medicine for self-doubt is evidence.
What have you already accomplished or experienced that proves your brain’s “you’re failing” narrative wrong?
So last night, I went back to 2022 — when Savvy Sloth was a literal fetus — and started jotting down notes: metrics, number of clients, sales, everything. I did this for every year up to now.
My mood immediately shifted because the proof was in the spreadsheet (of course, systems girls love a spreadsheet). I saw how much I’ve grown since day one.
My brand is established.
My marketing is thriving.
I have a website, a newsletter, all of you amazing subscribers.
My leads and clients have increased exponentially.
Even revenue is up. It’s not exactly where I want it to be — hello, economy — but it’s moving in the right direction, and that’s the point.
All of this tells me I am on the right path. It is working. I just need to keep going.
It’s not the plan I originally had, but the side quests, hiccups, and pit stops are all happening for a reason. They’re contributing to my goals in ways I couldn’t have planned.
Last night’s exercise reminded me of two quotes that have been rewiring my mindset lately:
“All a plan is, all it could ever possibly be, is a present moment statement of intent. It's an expression of your current thoughts about how you'd ideally like to deploy your modest influence over the future. The future, of course, is under no obligation to comply.” —
Oliver Burkeman
“Always have a vision, but don't have an iron-clad grip on it. Don't marry it.” —
Eli Rallo
As a systems girl, those are hard pills to swallow — but they’re so true.
It doesn't mean we never plan. We always have a goal, a plan, a vision for how we want things to go. That's how you create momentum and start things, but we can’t hold on so tightly to the plan that we miss the wonder around us.
It’s like going on a hike and only staring down at the trail. If you never look up, you’ll miss the waterfall, the gorgeous plants, the family of chipmunks waving at you. You might even miss a shortcut — or notice that your path has some rocky terrain.
So as we head into the holidays, wrap up the year, and start prepping for new goals, remember this: sticking too tightly to what you think is best in this moment might keep you from something truly magical. So if the kids want to try a new tradition, the store is out of whatever you need, or your campaign flops…
Give yourself some grace. Loosen the reins a bit. Enjoy the moment and soak in what it's trying to tell you.
You only get this one — right here, right now.
Don’t miss it. 💛
XOXO,
Renee
